Steady Progress Toward Our Goals and Vision

Thank you for visiting my campaign webpage.  My name is Brian Guerrero.  As a parent, veteran educator, union leader, and organizer, trainer and education policy analyst with the California Teachers Association, I have brought my unique set of skills to the Culver City Unified School District School Board for the last 3½ years.  I have used my experience as the only educator and the only union member on the Board to drive decisions and policies that have moved CCUSD forward and resulted in positive outcomes for all students.

When I ran for the Board 4 years ago and spent months listening to members of the community, I promised to work with my fellow board members, district leadership, teachers, classified staff, employee unions, students and families to:

  1.  Provide high-quality, rigorous, well-supported academic, social-emotional, artistic and athletic experiences for all students on safe, well-maintained campuses.
  2. Promise access and inclusion for all students, particularly students with disabilities and English learners, in the high-quality experiences provided to other students.
  3. Reflect critically on existing policies and practices for barriers to student success, asking uncomfortable questions and using data and listening to the experiences of students and families for answers.
  4. Value diversity in all forms, celebrating the richness and joy of our community and assuring that diverse voices have a role in decision-making at schools and at the district.
  5. Engage with interest-holder groups regularly, reaching out, listening and collaborating with diverse communities on matters they feel are important and that impact students, families, employees and the district.

I believe I have delivered on these promises.

We reopened Culver Park High School, added more advanced AP classes at Culver City High school, and fought to maintain counselors and mental health specialists despite economic hardships.  We improved school safety, passed a major facilities construction bond, and are soon to break ground on modernization projects at every school campus.  We’re moving forward with our updated Inclusion and English-Learner Master Plans and the Black Student Achievemnt Plan.  We’ve taken huge steps forward in building a culture of data-driven planning and accountability while involving more students and other interest holders in decision-making.  And we continue to proudly celebrate our diversity and resist pressure from the federal administration to abandon and reject our most vulnerable populations.

We’ve made so much progress… and yet we still have more work to do.  The lessons we’ve learned and changes we’ve made are fresh.  We need to stay the course, continue the steady progress, continue focusing on student opportunities and outcomes, continue working with our labor partners in meaningful ways, and continue building the trust and confidence of the community in our schools and district until we’ve fully revitalized CCUSD and made it the centerpiece of our community.
